Every problem also offers potential, not least in urban design, all the more so when Duravit products are part of the solution. An innovative and unique play area for children was installed recently on the hitherto top floor of a multi-story car park in the center of Nuremberg. The Wolke 10 kindergarten demonstrates how an unusual space can be converted quickly into a paradise high in the sky for children.
Situated at an elevation of 55 feet in the densely populated Südstadt district of Nuremberg, it is the highest kindergarten in Germany, offering space for eighty-six children up to the age of six. The children can romp safely and without obstruction in the roof-top playground and garden in the shade of 13 ft high trees. A 10 feet high wall from the original car park protects the lofty site and there are nets to catch any wayward balls.
The elongated timber-frame construction of the kindergarten itself with its recessed wooden facade stretches along the south side of the roof. The play and rest areas have large panorama windows offering plenty of light, but neither the outdoor nor the indoor areas can be looked into – a sought-after rarity in a built-up urban area.
The open and inviting interiors are designed with a focus on proportion and detail. The washrooms and disabled toilet feature Duravit products from the Starck 3 and Vero ranges.
