Service News 02.04.2018 | Duravit is Ready for Spring with 2018 Bath Trend Forecast
centuries of industry expertise. The forward-thinking brand is betting on up-and-coming influences centered around smart technology, adaptable features, contrasting color, and wellness benefits to shape the year’s bathroom designs.
“This year will feature strong technology and wellness developments in the bathroom,” explains Duravit USA President Tim Schroeder. “We’re looking to the future of the bathroom, and keeping our finger on the pulse of what the bathroom can and will become for designers and consumers alike.”
The outlook for 2018 is showcasing strong design trends; transitioning away from a white washout to embracing a balanced range of muted tones and deep hues. Design talk of ‘maximalism’ isn’t unbeknownst to the bathroom - with elegant, stand-out freestanding tubs carving their way onto the scene, striking shapes taking over the toilet, and on-trend matte finishes, rich gemstone colors, and soft neutral palettes finding a way to coexist in 2018.
“Not only are trends shifting in 2018, but North America’s demographic is evolving as well. The bathroom market is shaping up to meet a variety of needs and aesthetics - whether that’s subtle, bold, or adaptable,” continues Schroeder.
Wellness is In
As the bathroom is increasingly recognized as one of the most important spaces in the home, a key element is the integration of wellness features and maximizing spa potential. No matter the size, creating a dedicated area for personal relaxation continues to be an evolving and dominating trend for 2018. For smaller spaces, trends to watch include: soothing color palettes, natural materials, and ergonomic shapes that attribute an aura of well-being without compromising square footage. For those with more room to work with, freestanding bathtubs are
headlining as both a design focal point and wellness standout. Statement tubs are bringing rejuvenation to the forefront – creating a visual reminder that the bath is where relaxation reigns supreme. Duravit’s DuraSolid A tub
material ups the relaxation factor -- this solid surface material has a cashmere-like finish that is warm to the touch and creates a welcoming, soft matte look.
Stand-out Shades & Shapes
After a year of slowly breaking up with white subway tile and pale cabinetry, color and experimentation
is making a welcomed resurgence in the bath for 2018. Unexpected tones like deep navy, sunny yellow, and
forest green are here to stay - showing up in accent colors, cabinetry, or bath accessories. For those who don’t favor the bold, palatable neutrals will remain relevant thanks to their staying power and versatility, with non-white
neutrals like sand, grays, and blushes leading the pack. Alongside neutrals, on-trend matte black will chicly balance both soft and rich hues, adding a striking element throughout the bath. 2018 can also expect an influx of organic materials -- ranging from wood to granite countertops, natural accents add both aesthetic interest
and a fresh complement to this year’s wider color palette. Alongside color and materials, strong shapes are also integrating their way into the market. 2018 may see more geometric, angular toilet bowl shapes, as the unique design offers visual, modern interest to the bath.
Tech-Obsessed
As the “smart kitchen” revolution kicks into high gear, the bathroom won’t be left behind. Innovations in material
development, hygienic finishes and smart toilet technology are set to shape the market for 2018. Duravit is paving the way for a high-tech bathroom with innovative mirror technology, highlighting wellness benefits in the
bath. Released in 2017, the Luv mirrors utilize no-touch technology to adjust mirror lighting and provide a smart
“anti-fog” function while showering or bathing. Also on Duravit’s radar: material developments engineered for
ultimate hygiene, relaxation, and peace of mind. Duravit’s proprietary HygieneGlaze 2.0 answers to this
trend – providing an unprecedented sanitary finish that eliminates 99.999% of bacteria within 24 hours.
Adaptability + Accessibility
In response to North America’s diversifying demographic, Duravit is predicting a heightened demand for
aging-in-place features within the bathroom scene. 87% of adults aged 65+ want to stay in their current home as they age ( National Building Museum ), bolstering the need for accessible and adaptable features. As this percentage grows, consumers are embracing wall-hung toilets, bidets and bidet seats more than ever before. Generational demographics may also be driving this shift - as millennials’ focus on wellness could motivate the push towards bidets for their health benefits, while baby boomers may opt for this European standard as a
retirement-friendly perk. As micro-units and tiny-houses popularize for their sustainability and low cost, wall-hung toilets are growing increasingly resonant with consumers for their space-saving benefits and minimalist design.
Duravit will launch its latest line up of products this April at Salone del Mobile, Milano and in May at New York’s ICFF, demonstrating these trends in action.
