Remote Lake Cabin
Cocooned in nature, the “Remote Lake Cabin” nestles by a lake in the Adirondack Mountains. Surrounded by trees in its hillside location, the building designed by Stonorov Workshop Architects perfectly harmonizes with its surroundings on both a conceptual and visual level. Minimalism and convening with nature are writ large in this project. The house contains a combined kitchen and living area, two bedrooms, a bathroom and provides space for up to six people – on a floor plan of less than 60 square meters. Designed using minimalistic principles, the rooms are kept as small as possible. The main room has large windows with access to a terrace and the landscape beyond.
The Remote Lake Cabin is designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape. This fundamental principle ultimately means maintaining the authenticity of the location as far as possible – with minimal impact on the environment.
In keeping with this philosophy, alternative construction methods were chosen that did not require the use of cranes and heavy machinery. With creativity and loving attention to detail, much of the Remote Lake Cabin was constructed by the Stonorov Workshop in a challenging location.
As the cabin has no road access, diggers and materials had to be transported by raft and boat.
To ensure minimal impact on the surroundings, the cabin rests only minimally on the land – the existing ecosystem can continue to thrive beneath the structure.
With a few exceptions, everything in the cabin is made-to-measure and hand-built. The basic building structure consists of a wood-paneled frame connected to steel components.
The cabin was designed to be energy-efficient, with electric light only required in the hours of low sun. The cabin’s minimal power requirements are satisfied by a solar field. Additionally, energy-efficient glazing was used.
Rooms flooded with sunlight, natural and untreated wood and a wood stove create a unique atmosphere of wellbeing in the Remote Lake Cabin. After a long and extensive hike or a day on the lake, guests can relax at their leisure in the Starck bathtub by Duravit. Located directly by the bathroom window, the rustling of the leaves in the surrounding trees can be enjoyed here – a true retreat far away from the stress and noise of civilization.
